Over the last couple of days, we have seen high wind gusts, wreaking havoc on your home! Today, I want to discuss how, you, the homeowner, can make the easy repairs yourself.
1. Do you have missing shingles? As picture shows, it’s pretty easy to identify those. The repair is just as easy, especially if you have extra shingles laying around. If not, any home center should have a match available for you. To replace these shingles, just lift up on the shingle that overlaps the top, remove the nails that are exposed, slide in a new shingle, nail in using 6 nails on the nail line (don’t forget to nail the shingle that over laps too), then use roof sealant to seal the overlapping shingles. That’s it!
2. Do you have shingles that have lifted up? These are really easy to repair. Just apply roof sealant under each shingle that has lifted up and then press down along the seam you want sealed.
3. Sometimes the wind will have near by trees rub against the side of the house or even on the roof. These are little bit more labor intensive to repair, but still doable for the typical homeowner. First, thing you have to do is remove the branches that are rubbing or resting against the house. Simply use any saw to simply cut away. Once you reveal the shingles, look at the granules on the shingles. You should see complete coverage of the granules. If there are any granules missing, exposing the shingle “membrane”, then you should replace those shingles. Use the same method as if replacing missing shingles. You will probably have to replace multiple pieces. Use extra caution when removing the shingles so you don’t ruin neighboring shingles.
If you happen to see these issues on your roof, you should be able to tackle it yourself. However, if you don’t have the time or just don’t want to try it, give us a call. We can give you free quote to make any repairs needed. Most times, you don’t even need to involve your insurance because the costs are so little.
